My work spans from heavy timber framing in Alaska, Big Sky and the Yellowstone Club to residential remodeling right here in Bozeman. Working on high end homes is a treat - and I started Heartwood Craft in order to bring that skill set down into the Gallatin Valley.

This page is organized by category — timber framing, decks, porches, interiors, and custom builds. I'm also adding before-and-after galleries for recent bathroom and basement projects as they're assembled.

Timber Framing & Structural Work

Heavy timber construction, post-and-beam framing, and structural carpentry. This is the work I cut my teeth on — years of building in Alaska and Big Sky, where precision and craftsmanship aren't optional.

Every joint in a timber frame is visible — there's nowhere to hide a bad cut. These projects demand exact tolerances on timbers weighing hundreds of pounds, and the connections need to carry serious loads through Montana's snow seasons. It's the most demanding carpentry I do, and it built the foundation for everything else.

Custom Decks

Cedar and composite decks built for Montana's freeze-thaw cycles. Proper footings, galvanized hardware, and flashing details that protect your home for decades.

Most deck failures I see around Bozeman come down to two things: footings that aren't below the 36-inch frost line and ledger connections that let water into the house. I build to avoid both. Whether it's a simple attached deck or a multi-level composite build on a sloped lot, the engineering has to match the climate. Porches & Exterior Work

Front porches, covered entries, siding, and exterior trim — the work that defines how a home looks from the street and holds up against Montana weather.

Porch projects often uncover rotted substructure, inadequate flashing, or framing that was undersized from the start. I address the structural issues alongside the visible work so the finished product holds up — not just for curb appeal, but through years of snow, ice, and spring runoff.

Interior Work

Trim, cabinetry, built-ins, and finish carpentry. The interior details that make a room feel complete — not just renovated, but crafted.

This is where precision shows up in the details you interact with every day — the drawer that closes smoothly, the crown molding that meets in a tight miter, the built-in that fits the space exactly. Interior work requires patience and an understanding of how wood moves seasonally, especially in Montana's dry winters and humid summers.

Custom Builds

One-of-a-kind projects — the kind of work where the design and the craftsmanship are inseparable.

These are jobs that don't come from a catalog. A homeowner has a specific vision — a piece of furniture, a feature wall, a structure that doesn't fit a standard category — and my job is to figure out how to build it so it looks right and holds up.

Bathrooms & Basements

This is the core of what I do at Heartwood Craft — full bathroom remodels and basement finishing for Bozeman homeowners. I'm currently assembling before-and-after galleries that show the full story: existing condition → 3D rendering → completed project.

In the meantime, I'm happy to walk you through photos of recent work over the phone. Call 406-551-5061 or check the cost calculator to get a ballpark for your project.
